A reader who’d just discovered that all the local ads are gone from this blog emailed me yesterday asking to which site he should go to find my old advertisers. I answered in one word: Backpage. Minutes later he wrote back that it wasn’t readily apparent which of those ads was an A-list place and which was a crappy spa with lumpy staff.
Not really my problem. I left it at that until the next day when I logged on to Backpage for what reason I can’t remember and decided to peruse the sponsor ads (the crap on the sidebar which doesn’t generate any calls) and discovered that all but one A-list place had abandoned that worthless piece of real estate.
So while it would be inadvisable for me to reveal who’s hot and who’s not on that shitshow of a website, I will tell you this: The great majority of the Asian ads I saw were “spa” ads exhibiting gratuitous amounts of glitz, “glamor,” and clutter reminiscent of the hispanic female drug dealers dressed in pastel-colored spandex who used to sell pot on my block.
Several months ago when Backpage had a problem, a few of those places called to advertise here. They did not do well – a reality which didn’t surprise me when I saw the visual quality of the staff. I would have walked were I a prospective customer which according to one owner, is exactly what happened when guys called from this site. I’m sure there are a few decent girls at these places but in the dozen or so I saw, there weren’t any.
I haven’t researched where my old customers have gone ad-wise…and only spoken with one since June 1st. And the last time I checked they mostly didn’t know what to do next. I assume that they’ll find their way – as will the readers who depended on this site to find the best Asian places in New York.
If my old customers and readers aren’t sure about their next move, you’re not alone. At what is likely to be the last meeting with my pretrial officer, she asked what I was going to do next now that the ads are off this blog. I’m not sure if she meant activity or income-wise. With the former, not a lot has changed. I still write and volunteer almost every day. All that’s removed is a little tech stuff and collections – neither of which took very much time or effort.
As for the latter, she eventually remembered “oh yeah! You got your money back. I guess you don’t have to work.” I responded that while I was fine financially, I’m not really ready to sit on a front porch in a rocking chair smoking a pipe – and that like the readers and advertisers of this blog…I’ll figure something out eventually. Whatever…we’ll all find our way. That’s today’s theme. I’m out…in search of a new direction…albeit at a retiree’s pace.
