But guess what! The US gov just got lucky! Apparently a realtor out in the Midwest took a competitor to court for stealing its contacts and ads illegally. As a result, the accused’s contractor in the Philippines (where else could you get the job done so cheaply? Oh yeah, India) was raided and guess what the gov found in that contractor’s computer files? Proof that BP hired the same outfit to clone ads for sex from other sites and reproduce them on their own. All this complete with laughable audio tape files of those robotic-sounding foreigners asking for whores’ email addresses over the phone so they could set them up with accounts and even write their ads in the hopes that the girls would switch from the competitor’s site to Backpage! Can you spell B-U-S-T-E-D?
I can’t understand why Carl and company would even embark on such a lame and dangerous project. First of all, my experience tells me that #1 in the field has never resorted to this kind of hustle. Generally, they just lie back and take the orders. They’re simply too busy with that to beat the bushes for more business – especially in as awkward and embarrassing a manner as using foreigners whose English sucks to do the job.
Whatever…I’m not going to predict whether this truly sounds the death knell for Backpage. But I can tell you this. Something will! As I said, where there’s a will there’s a way when it comes to the US judicial system getting their man. Remember Al Capone? Did they get him for all that racketeering, murder and mayhem? Nope. They got him on tax evasion! See what I mean?
Wanna know how in earnest the gov is on this deal? They’re even introducing legislation to amend the CDA (Communications Decency Act) to close the loophole that exonerates Backpage. It might not be over yet but just like death and taxes (couldn’t resist), the inevitable is coming. It’s just a matter of when.
