If you read Yahoo News every morning like I do, I’m sure you’re aware of the sorry case of CYNTOIA BROWN – and the celebrity drive to set her free. The fact that the two famous individuals (KIM KARDASHIAN and RIHANNA) are in relationships with men who are either abusers – or simply incredible assholes – would strike me as relevant in this instance.
To enlighten those who missed the news…Cyntoia Brown was a 16 year-old runaway who hooked up with a pimp and began turning tricks under his “management.” Ordered to go out and make some money, Ms. Brown met a guy at the local Sonic restaurant and accepted his invitation to go to his home and have sex for a fee. After experiencing his erratic behavior and seeing that he had firearms in clear view, she shot him dead when he reached for the night table presumably (according to Brown) to retrieve something to harm her. That is more or less the way the situation is portrayed in a moving 2011 documentary dedicated to her plight. And now at least two celebrities want her to be freed after serving 13 years in prison.
On its face, it really does seem a little harsh to give a 16 year-old girl a life sentence (that’s what she got) for defending herself against a predator. But what the documentary and the celebs don’t ask is exactly how this girl ended up convicted of first degree murder to get that life sentence? How could that happen?
And here’s where the film and the celebrity drive derails. There are some interesting facts about this case Cyntoia’s benefactors would rather you not know. Like just for one, Brown killed the trick with her own gun! Yup! Our little princess was packin’ heat that day! Viewing the doc, you would assume that she offed the guy with his own weapon. But if you do a little research, you’ll find the aforementioned truth. And after she killed the dude, Cyntoia then stole the money out of the dead man’s wallet and walked off with two of his firearms. Finally, the body was found in a recumbent position, indicating he might have been murdered in his sleep. Anyway, what I assume was a somewhat redneck Tennessee jury, found her guilty on all charges, one of which included murder in the first degree.
While I don’t always have a lot of sympathy for flatbackin’ hoochies of the profligate variety, I mostly have to side with the celebrity hoochies who would have her set free. I don’t believe Cyntoia hit the bricks that day looking to kill somebody. She got in a bad situation and executed a trick. That sounds like second degree murder at most. And that charge doesn’t carry a life sentence.
Second, I have to take her youth into consideration. Yeah, there are plenty of 16 year-olds nowadays who do drugs and fuck lots of guys. But still…16? First degree murder? No sale. And finally, Cyntoia has been a model prisoner for 13 years. That ought to count for something. So I say let her out. She probably shouldn’t have killed the guy. But what dude goes to a Sonic to pick up a teenager for sex while he knows that there are multiple guns out in the open back at his crib? Definitely something off about that dude.
Well anyway…if you run away from home and hook up with a pimp to sell ass, I can’t imagine that even the most clueless 16 year-old wouldn’t know she was headed down a dangerous path. But who knows? Even in my youth, I never did anything remotely as stupid as this girl did. So what the fuck do I know?
