Several months ago it came to my attention that HBO was shooting at the same location where I volunteer every Saturday. And then a few weeks later, I discovered the show was actually “THE DEUCE,” a throwback epic saga about hookers and pornographic productions all taking place around the old legendary 42nd Street of 40 years ago.
Yes, I’d seen pieces from the set when humping cardboard upstairs and into the back room. But I couldn’t remember one occasion while watching the entire first year of “The Deuce” when I realized that the crew was shooting a scene where I volunteer. That changed last night. I had the “aha” moment 45 minutes into week 2 of Season 2. There it was: Cops talking shop right where I serve food to the homies!
Ok! Whatever! I’m not gonna drop a load in my pants over the realization. But today at Trinity, we had a new volunteer – a very nice and decent girl who said she was from Los Angeles and in New York visiting for a couple of weeks. Why she would choose to feed poor people on vacation was a question I did not ask. We all have our own reasons for volunteering. It wasn’t my business.
So toward the end of the shift, I came to understand that this normal and nice girl is an actress of some renown. She’s appeared on numerous television shows and had a starring role in a couple of the Chucky movies. When I went home and Googled FIONA DOURIF was when I found out she’s a modern day scream queen.
Now I don’t get all gushy about celebrities. When I was a cabby, I never asked them for an autograph when they rode with me (and there were several). Just not my style. What did strike me about this woman was that she took the time to volunteer through an app while she was in New York I assume pursuant to an acting gig. And that is cool! Not all of Hollywood is totally and completely narcissistic. Who’d-a-thunk?
