The recent midterm elections brought some interesting results beyond the obvious (Democrats now control the house). Just for (another) example, a mere 516 years after Columbus didn’t land in the United Sates of America (and never did on any of his four voyages to the New World), the USA has its first native American congresswoman. Her name is SHARICE DAVIDS, and this woman appears to be a force to be reckoned with.
Like…you wouldn’t want to pick a fight with Ms. Davids. She’ll kick your ass in court (she’s a lawyer). And if that doesn’t work, she’ll just plain kick your ass. (Sharice Davids is a mixed martial arts fighter.) And in case you’re so inclined, I wouldn’t use any homophobic slurs around her. She identifies as lesbian. But to be serious…our first native American congressperson? Not a good look!
Moving on…right now I’m not all that keen on being an American. You can guess why. But I have to admit to getting warm and fuzzy when I discovered that ILHAN OMAR, a refugee Somali American muslim woman, was elected to congress from the great state of Minnesota – head wrap and all! Of course, it helps that she’s articulate and pretty. Especially the latter.
And there was yet another muslim – this time an Afghani female refugee – elected to a state legislative position this year. In fact, a record number of women ran and won office in the recent midterm elections. Which is a good thing by me. Women have been marginalized and underrepresented in all areas of life like forever! That equality claim in the Declaration of Independence really rings hollow when it comes to women!
Well anyway, it’s all moot with refernce to my situation. I seriously doubt any of the aforementioned female congresspeople are gonna read this and say “Why the fuck are you incarcerating Dollar Bill? He paid his debt and then some. And he feeds the homeless almost every day! You’re gonna pull 50 k out of the taxpayer’s pocket so he can sit around doing nothing save hear about the criminal life?”
Let’s get real. What do guys really talk about in prison? Answer: What they did to get there. How they got caught. And what a raw deal they got being there in the first place. This sounds about as toxic as it gets. Why would you want to send anybody there who isn’t a danger to society? Beats me!
You could argue that the USA is slowly and inexorably ceding its leadership role in the world. But not that the country isn’t the world leader in locking up its citizens. The United States of America incarcerates a greater percentage of its inhabitants than any other country in the world. And that’s not an alternative fact. That’s a fact. Period.
